Most kitchens need a chiller at 0°C to 5°C for fresh produce, dairy and prepped food. Frozen storage runs at -18°C to -22°C. We handle both chilled builds and freezer room installation Chelsea sites depend on, and we can fit twin rooms where you need chilled and frozen space side by side.

There’s a particular thing about doing this work around here. Chelsea is as design-conscious as anywhere in the country, home of the Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour, and a lot of the cold rooms we’re asked for are not tucked away out of sight. They sit in open kitchens where diners can see straight through, in smart delis and fine-food shops where the fridge is part of the display, in members’ clubs and gallery cafes, and in restored townhouses where nobody wants a scruffy grey box bolted into a beautiful room. Add the King’s Road restaurants, the Sloane Square end, the riverside kitchens and the private houses with serious catering, and there’s a real premium on a room that looks right as well as holds temperature.

That changes how we approach the build, though not what makes it work underneath. A room on show can have glass doors, a stainless or clad finish that sits with the joinery, discreet lighting and pipework run out of sight, and it should, if that is what the space wants. What it cannot do is let the look undermine the job. A glass door is a lovely thing and also a heat load, so it wants sizing and siting for; a cladding that matches your interior still has to be wipe-clean and mustn’t trap dirt in a seam; and hiding the condenser behind a smart screen is fine right up until the screen starves it of air and the room stops holding on a warm night. The trick is getting both, and after 25 years we know where the lines are. We will tell you honestly when a design idea will cost you in performance or running cost, and where there is a way to have the look without the penalty.

There is a legal side underneath the finish too. However neat the installation looks, the refrigerant inside it must be handled by qualified people under F-Gas rules, the UK law covering how these gases are installed, checked and disposed of, enforced here in England by the Environment Agency. Our engineers are F-Gas certified and Level 3 RACHP qualified, so the paperwork is right from day one.

Panels are smooth and wipe-clean, joints sealed properly, so nobody is scrubbing at a seam on a Friday night. And whatever the room looks like, sizing is the thing people get wrong. An oversized unit burns money every hour it runs; an undersized one never quite catches up on a warm day and wears out early.
